Class: Grade 7, General Science Unit: From Cell to Organs
Title: Anatomy of Memory
Before this lesson is implemented all individual education plans will be reviewed and appropriate accommodations and/ or modifications will be made to attend to students' needs.
Instructional Objectives:
Students will engage in a hands on lab activity about the different parts of the brain.
Students will investigate through an interactive website about which parts of the brain are responsible for memory.
Students will apply already learned concepts to new material.
Students will pose questions.
Students will analyze and interpret data. (Data in this lab would be the actual visual representation of the sheep brain.)
Activities and Assignments:
15 Minutes- I will briefly review yesterday's lesson, however most students will be distracted by what is on the table in the front of the room. I will wait in silence until a brave student finally asks what they are going to be doing. I will respond with, dissecting sheep brains of course! I will ask students "Do you remember times when you have tests and you just can't recall the information? Or have you ever learned something so many times that you feel you will remember it 50 years down the line?" I will explain this is due to different sets of memory which is a huge component of brain function. I will explain that this is the topic we will be covering today as well as observing the previous day's objectives of learning the different regions and lobes of the brain. I will take questions for a few minutes before beginning the lesson.
65 Minutes- Pass out materials for dissection lab. Give directions. Students will perform online dissections, mirroring the dissection I am doing in the front of the class. After each dissection I will walk around the room and answer all questions about what the students are viewing. Also after each interactive dissection I will explain what they are looking at. They are then suggested to draw what they see into their lab notebooks as it will be a great study guide. The segment online is a dissection of a sheep's brain and gives a clear picture as to what you are viewing and the functions that go along with the structures. However, since this lab is focused mainly on the topic of memory that is what I want students to pay the most attention to.
10 Minutes- I will instruct students to log off of the computers and clean their spaces. I will re-emphasize the meaning of this lab and let students know that the next topic is about protecting the brain.
